Two men in their twenties sustained multiple injuries after cutting the structure at 12.30pm on Tuesday at the Bentley campus in southeastern Perth. Both, as well as the person who died are all understood to be construction workers.
St John Ambulance, WA police and firefighters are all working to free others who may be trapped in the rubble at the scene.
A spokesman for St. John's Ambulance said they did not know how many were injured but several crew members were at the scene.
In an update on Twitter later, St John Ambulance reported that two 20-year-olds had been transferred to the Royal Perth Hospital with multiple injuries.
About 100 workers were working on the site of the building at the time of the incident and were immediately evacuated.
They were told to go home, but many of them got stuck and sat on the grass opposite the landslide.
‘Keep in touch with your partner and your employer for further instructions when returning to work,’ a union representative told workers.
The building involved is known as the School of Design and the Built Environment, 418 Building.
It is understood the five-storey building was under construction at the time of the collapse.
Preliminary reports suggest a glass ceiling fell into the entire site, crushing a construction vehicle in process.
Students on campus received a text warning them about the incident.
The message reads: 'Accident occurred at the construction site of 418 building. Emergency services are on the scene. Please avoid the area and avoid University Boulevard, 'Perth Now reported.
The building near the university's medical school was part of a project called The Exchange.
The project, which includes a hotel, student accommodation and retail stores, is planned to be completed in Semester One of 2022.
Construction on the site began last year.
